The Effects of Cobalt Supplementation of Pregnant Heifers on Lactation and Calf Growth
نویسندگان
چکیده
An experiment was conducted to measure the effects of cobalt supplementation of pregnant heifers grazing pangola grass pastures on lactation and calf growth. Seven pregnant Hereford heifers were used, with three of these receiving a cobalt bullet and grinder four months after insemination. Cobalt supplementation of heifers had no effect on subsequent milk production or composition. However, calves from supplemented heifers showed a higher growth rate and, at weaning, were 27 kg heavier than calves from unsupplemented heifers. The relationship between the cobalt and vitamin B12 requirements of the calf and cow are discussed.

Feeding a low manganese diet to heifers during gestation impairs fetal growth and development.
A study was conducted to examine the effects of low dietary Mn on growth performance of pregnant heifers and fetal development of their offspring. Twenty pregnant Angus (n = 9) and Simmental (n = 11) heifers averaging 17 mo of age and 447.6 kg of initial body weight were used in the 267-d study. Heifers were selected from a previous study examining the effects of supplemental Mn on growth and r...
متن کاملEvaluation of Heifer Management Criteria for Improved Lactation and Reduced Dystocia: A Systematic Analysis of Body Weight, Average Daily Gain, and Age
Decisive heifer management for improved lactation and reduced dystocia requires a systematic analysis of age, body weight (BW), and average daily gain (ADG) using an adequately large sample size. The objective of this study was to determine effects of BW and age at first breeding and ADG until pregnancy on yields of milk, milk fat, and milk protein in the first lactation and the occurrence of d...
متن کاملNutritionally altering weight gain patterns of pregnant heifers and young cows changes the time that feed resources are offered without any differences in production.
We hypothesized that feed resources could be deferred to a later time in the production cycle without a decrease in fertility or weight of calf produced in heifers and young cows. One-hundred and thirty-one MARC III (four breed composite: (1/4) Hereford, (1/4) Angus, (1/4) Red Poll, and (1/4) Pinzgauer) heifers were divided into three treatments: M-M-M-M (n = 46), L-H-M-M (n = 41), and L-L-L-H ...
متن کاملImpact of supplemental protein source offered to primiparous heifers during gestation on I. Average daily gain, feed intake, calf birth body weight, and rebreeding in pregnant beef heifers.
A 3-yr study was conducted to determine the effect of supplemental protein source on ADG, feed intake, calf birth BW, and subsequent pregnancy rate in pregnant beef heifers. Crossbred, Angus-based, AI-pregnant heifers (yr 1, n = 38; yr 2, n = 40; and yr 3, n = 36) were stratified by BW (450 ± 10 kg) and placed in a Calan Broadbent individual feeding system at approximately d 142 of gestation. متن کاملLimit-feeding corn as an alternative to hay for gestating beef cows.
Three experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of limit-feeding corn-based diets as an alternative to hay for beef cows in gestation and early lactation. Seventy or 71 mature, pregnant Simmental crossbred cows (average weight = 589 +/- 10 kg) were used in each trial. Each of 29 or 30 cows was fed approximately 5 kg of whole shelled corn, 1.2 kg of a pelletted supplement, and 1 kg of...
